The sludge is the most important waste produced in a sewage treatment plant. This project proposes a novel alternative for its energetic use as it aims to demonstrate the feasibility of the conversion of sewage sludge into diesel fuel through a process of molecular rupture using a catalyst and a distillation at a temperature of about 300 ºC.
With this objective DAM will operate a pilot plant for production of biodiesel from WWTP sludges. The technology for conversion of organic waste to biodiesel is already being applied to some types of waste such as wood industry wastes. On the contrary it has never been tested for WWTP sludges.
